The Taylormade Mini Golden Retriever is a hybrid Mix of Golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, and Poodle that started in 1989 when Michele Taylor’s father took her to see a litter of Golden Cocker Retriever puppies for sale! At this time, the idea of an official Miniature Golden Retriever breed had not been born, but these puppies all looked like darling, small Golden Retrievers. Overjoyed to see these tiny Golden retriever looking puppies, Michele excitedly picked out a beautiful female puppy she named Muffin Lacey or “Muffy” for Short. Everyone who came in contact with Muffy fell in love with her wonderful temperament and the fact that she carried the classic look of a Petite Golden Retriever.

Also, Cocker Spaniels carry a low shedding gene, so Muffy shed very little. With this news… Friends, family, and neighbors all wanted a puppy exactly like Muffy. Michele started doing research and poured over books, going to dog shows, and working with veterinarians to learn all she could about how to breed quality miniature golden retriever puppies with an emphasis on health and Mini Golden Retrievers that don’t shed.

This is when the Taylor family become Mini Golden Retriever breeders and Taylormade Mini Goldens became a reality. With advances in Genetic testing Taylormade Mini Goldens now have Golden Cocker Retrievers and Mini Golden Retrievers for sale that we can identify as low shedding. We also have Golden Cocker Retrievers and Miniature Golden Retrievers that do shed more and we’ll cover more about the differences in the coats to help families find the best Taylormade fit.

So in answer to the question “Is there a Mini Golden Retriever? The answer is YES! The way we carefully produce a miniature Golden Retriever is that we mix a golden retriever, a cocker spaniel, and Poodle.

The reason we created this mix of three beautiful and intelligent breeds is because, first the Golden retriever is one of the best family dogs with a wonderful temperament and stunning looks. Second, The Cocker Spaniel keeps the size down and reduces the shedding, and also adds a calming effect to the personality, because the Cocker Spaniels we used in our lines are sweet, gentle, and lower energy. Third, we added the poodle to reduce the shedding, increase intelligence since poodles are one of the smartest dogs, poodles hold down the size of the Golden Retriever, and poodles shorten the ears of the Cocker Spaniel in the dogs lines. The Golden Cocker Retrievers tend to have larger ears and keep a forever puppy look that we love, but the Miniature Golden Retriever stays more close to the classic look of a Golden Retriever with shorter ears.

The benefits of Taylormade Mini Goldens:

• Generally less health problems. Hip dysplasia, eye problems, and ear infections can be dramatically reduced in this combination of breeding. We do health testing on our parents dogs to ensure we are breeding top Quality. We health test with these recommended organizations: OFA (which is Orthopedic Foundation for Animals), Embark DNA genetics, Paw Print DNA Genetics, and PennHip.

• Small, Petite, toy, and Micro size Mini Golden Retrievers, our goal is a smaller size around 20-50 lbs and about 12-18 inches tall, full sized Golden Retrievers are generally 65-100 lbs. and 21-24 inches tall. . The size of our Mini Goldens depends on the parent dogs you choose a puppy from our Toy and Micro Mini Goldens come from Dams, or mama dogs, under 25 lbs paired with sires, or daddy dogs, under 25 lbs. Our medium sized Mini Golden Retrievers come from dams, or mama dogs, paired with sires, or daddy dogs, over 25 lbs.

  We want to keep as much of the classic Golden Retriever as we can so use small pure bred AKC (American Kennel Club) Golden Retrievers in our breeding program in combination with the AKC Cocker Spaniel, and AKC poodle to breed down the size of our dogs and creates a rare Designer breed. *Please note that we cannot guarantee size, we do our best, but DNA and lifestyle factors can play a role in size as well. With this beautiful creation we are not registering our dogs with AKC but with the International Designer Canine Registry.

• Less shedding, because the spaniels used in our lines had very minimal shedding and the poodle is non-shedding, this helps to reduce the shedding in our mini goldens. They are still considered shedding dogs. Some of our families still do want the gorgeous classic look of The Golden Retriever Coat, and this is a shedding coat. When you see that lion like mane you can guess it’s most likely a heavier shedding coat because of the layers of the dogs coat. The low shed coat can grow long and luxurious, but its not generally as thick and gorgeous as our Mini Goldens with a moderate or higher shedding coat that’s pretty much a show stopper!

• Great Personality, one of the things we have found so wonderful and amazing about the Taylormade Mini Golden Retriever is that diluting the gene pool of 3 great breeds helps bring out the best traits in the Mini Golden Retriever, in our opinion. The Taylormade Mini Golden is friendly, confident, and wonderful with children. They do not make great guard dogs as most everyone is a friend. On the other hand They will alert their owner if they feel endangered.
